Ireland is part of the eurozone and as such the currency is of course the euro. Previous to this the currency was the Irish punt.
Many retailers will still take sterling due to the close links with the UK, but beware - the rate you will get will be very poor and it is strongly recommended that you change your money in a bank or bureau de change.
Most high street bank chains offer foreign currency transactions. Normal opening hours for the banks are 10.00 to 16.30 Monday to Friday. In smaller towns in the country some banks close for lunch still!
In addition, in all the major shopping areas you will find bureax de change which are open longer hours than the banks, including Saturdays and Sundays
