Cars, Trains and Planes
Go back as little as 10 or 15 years ago, and Dublin`s transport infrastructure was a shadow of what we now have in Ireland`s capital. With 2 new tram lines installed recently and more extensions planned, the imminent completion of a Port Tunnel to move heavy vehicles directly out of Dublin, and the recent completion of the M50 ring road, transport is finally beginning to move in Dublin. A visit to Dublin Airport at any time of the day will show how popular air travel is now with Irish people, with regular flights to most major European and long haul destinations every day.
Ireland`s national rail service is called Iarnrod Eireann. There is a commuter overland train service that runs along the coast of Dublin that is called The DART. The 2 new tram systems are called the Luas Lines, but make sure you get the right one as they are not named separately!
Ireland`s national airline is Aer Lingus, but probably better know now is the European leader in low cost airlines, Ryanair. Both airlines operate out of Dublin Airport as their base together with a number of smaller pretenders.
The bus system in Dublin is almost entirely operated by Dublin Bus. With many bus lanes in operation throughout the capital, bus is a convenient and fast way to travel.
